The Sister Warriors Freedom Coalition is the expansion of our work and a vehicle to build the power of formerly incarcerated and system involved cis- and transgender women and girls and GNC people. We are a statewide movement that builds off the momentum of movements to end mass incarceration, state- and gender-based violence and criminalization.

In 2017 we launched the Sister Warriors Freedom Coalition as a vehicle to influence systems change and legislation. In 2018 we developed a Bill of Rights as a radical vision for the creation of a statewide, decade-long legislative strategy towards the decarceration of cis- and transgender women and girls and GNC people – Freedom 2030. On March 22 & 23, 2019, YWFC hosted a 2-day Sister Warriors Policy Summit in Oakland, bringing together over 130 formerly incarcerated women and TGNC people. On Day One, the Summit provided space for those most impacted to radically envision policy changes for California grounded in the Bill our Rights. On Day Two, we invited close legal and policy ally’s in to help develop a comprehensive strategy. Together we identified legislative priorities toward Freedom 2030.

In 2019, we transformed the Bill of Rights into a Freedom Charter as a compass for our movement to end the racial and gender apartheid of the prison, criminal legal and other public systems. In order to increase leadership of core Sister Warrior Freedom Coalition members and lead organizers, YWFC will host Freedom Academy 2-4 times per year.  Freedom Academy is a 3-4-day intensive training academy for members to advance their leadership skills to lead the Sister Warrior Freedom Coalition legislative agenda and transform the systems and policies that keep young women trapped in cycles of poverty, violence, and incarceration.
